Health and nutrition writer

Backed by a 30-year academic teaching and research career in nutrition and health, I now work chiefly as a freelance medical, health and nutrition writer and scientific consultant. You’ll also see me active in the media giving regular TV, radio and newspaper interviews.

Dr Tim Crowe
Dr Tim Crowe, PhD

Whether I am writing for health professionals or the general public, my writing is always based on current evidence informed by peer-reviewed journal articles, government and peak health body guidelines, and medical experts.

I can stand behind my qualifications in any health writing I produce. That means I’ve got a bunch of geeky letters to put after my name such as BSc(Hons), MNutrDiet and PhD. I’m also a credentialed Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian with the Dietitians Association of Australia.

What an experienced health writer can do for you

Working with an experienced medical, nutrition and health writer who has the qualifications and career credibility behind them can ensure your organisation maintains the reputation and credibility so essential in the public face you put forward. If you’re looking for someone to just give you one side of the story for advertising copy, then you may want to look elsewhere. I always provide a fair assessment of the evidence with a minimum of conflicts of interest to manage. Nutrition is confusing enough without the pushing of selective agendas.

If you have a project you would like to discuss be it website or newsletter content, magazine articles, media copy or scientific writing (25 years in research at PhD level means I’m pretty handy in writing and reviewing papers and grants) then please get in touch with me.

Following are some examples of my writing and the organisations I work with.

The Conversation

I’ve authored over 25 articles over at The Conversation The articles on foods that increase and decrease cancer risk and protein supplements have had over 1.8 million reads between them.

Medibank be. Magazine

Expert contributor as a health writer of over 20 nutrition, exercise and health articles for Medibank be. Magazine.

CHOICE Health Reader

I’ve been writing for over 10 years for CHOICE Health Reader edited by Dr Norman Swan and in that time have authored over 500 articles. CHOICE Health Reader is a reliable source of information covering everything from nutrition and diabetes to complementary medicine and family health. The magazine is subscription only, but the style of articles I’ve written mirrors what you’ll find here on my blog.

Healthy Food Guide

I sit on the editorial advisory board for Healthy Food Guide magazine where I give expert advice on nutrition-related stories as well as being a guest health writer contributor. Here are some of the stories I’ve been involved with.

Cengage Learning

And just to round out my writing experience, I’m also one of the authors of the academic textbook Understanding Nutrition. Now into its fourthedition, the book is the leading text used in undergraduate, postgraduate and VET sector nutrition and dietetics courses in the region.
